Keto Diet

1 2021-11-06 09:05

Does anybody here follow the keto diet?
I have been for the past 5 weeks.
Foods are delicious, my staples are:

eggs (omelettes = best)
avocado (guac is so good)

MEATS

bacon
ground beef (grass fed)
ground bison
ground pork
salmon
sardines
mackerel

CHEESE

goat cheese
parmesan
gouda
cheddar
mozzarella

OILS

olive oil (extra virgin)
avocado oil

NUTS

macadamia nuts (omega 7 & 9)
pistachios
pecans
walnuts
almonds
brazil nuts (selenium)

NUT BUTTERS

almond butter
peanut butter (powder form too + mix with cocoa)
walnut butter (not as good as almond tbh)

VEGETABLES

cauliflower
broccoli
asparagus
brussel sprouts

SNACKS

cacao (100% cacao, and I sweeten with erythritol | monkfruit | stevia)
keto bars (bhu brand)
pork rinds

I don't really eat snacks whenever, I place them with my meals to maximize ketosis.
I can go for 8+ hours inbetween meals.
I also fast 3 days a week, and I think that has helped with ketone production

Of course, I make sure to minimize omega 6 fats like almonds and peanuts
which is why I mostly eat macadamia nuts and pistachios
My carb contents is around 36g a day, and most are fiber, meaning my net carbs
is around 16; my sugar intake is 1 to 2 grams a day, although want 0 tbh

I made a lisp program to keep track of my macros and I source the data from
Chronometer, would be nice to use an API but I type it in manually
This program is fairly robust (2K LOC, but mostly data), but I'd like to make it more polished and have more features.

I started my weight loss journey 6 months ago at 180lb, right now I'm at 130lb
so I maintain with keto, wish I had done keto a while ago though
I recommend this diet tbh.

Weird hobby.

Sorry, it just stuck with me after a while in this journey.
In the beginning I was eating carbs and vegetable oils
I then ate two fruits a day which increased my sugar intake dramatically.
I've done so much research and watched videos, so now I know better.
Its just health shit, I'll probably diverge into skin care, teeth care, and similar hobbies.
Lisp and Linux will always be #1 though.

do you fast all at once (weekends?) or do you space it out over the week?

8 2021-11-06 19:13

I just ate some bread am I going to be fat?

9 2021-11-06 19:30

>>7
I vary it to shock my body.
Sometimes every other day.
Mostly eat for 2 days, then fast, then eat for 2 days, then fast 2 days
And when I look at the mirror and see some chin fat, 4 days in a row.
I make sure to do cardio during fasting days as that really burns the fat off.

The longest I've fasted is 9 days, and I felt very weak at the end, my pulse was too low, and I was worried.
Always take electrolytes (salt, potassium, magnesium) btw, otherwise you will die.
Water is very important of course.

Breaking the fast is important as well, I always do bone broth or lean protein.
The hardest days are the first 3 days, because you will feel the hunger more, although I'm used to it and water makes it go away.

I also drink apple cider vinegar and coffee and maybe tea,
with some rosemary or turmeric/curcumin or ginger sometimes.

Related, but sleep is important, and I've been neglecting it lately,
so I gotta sleep more plus fast 4 days because I just saw some chin fat.

Not necessarily, weight gain only happens with a caloric surplus.
Although, sometimes your body normalizes onto a weight and tries to hard to stay in that weight.
For me, it was 133.2lb for a while, but fasting has helped me reach 130lb.

However, bread is a carbohydrate, meaning your insulin will spike alot.
iirc, white bread is really high on the glycemic index (97?).
A hard insulin drop will cause a lot of hunger, causing you to eat more.
Overtime this adds up and leads to weight gain.

Although its not as simple, people don't just simply eat bread, they eat multiple foods.
And the combined glycemic index is lower as a result.

Carbs are not bad per say, they have their place, but if you have to eat carbs,
at least eat whole grains and more fibrous ones, as they satiate you more.
Also, avoid sugar at all costs.
There's also the issue of gluten, which is very inflammatory and alot of carbs have it.

There's more to all of it, its all about the lifestyle and food combinations.
Inflammation is the big problem and a clean keto diet minimizes it.
Sugar, along with vegetable oils and refined iodized salt are the biggest culprits
and a sure way ticket to having health problems later in life.

11 2021-11-06 23:13

>>10
I ate it with liver pate and tomatoes.

12 2021-11-06 23:40

I fast everyday. I eat all my food within a six hour timeframe: 1PM-7PM.

13 2021-11-06 23:55

>>11

liver

Nice! I hope to taste that very soon.
Live is so cheap, I can get about 3 pounds for 5 bucks wtf.
I gotta do more research on the fatty acid profile though.
But I heard it's packed with vitamins.

tomatoes

Taste good (specially with salt + oil), not too high carbs.
I wish I could tomato more, but the carbs man.
I only have it when I make my own cauliflower pizza though.

Yeah you're fine, protein is so satiating,
Just don't eat simple carbs like white bread by itself, you will get hungry 5 min later.

14 2021-11-06 23:59

>>12
So you're doing intermittent fasting huh.
That's nice, I've never done it tbh.
I always did alternate day fasting or 24h+ fasting
Maybe IF is more sustainable/easy, I gotta give it a try.

But fasting for longer has more benefits, so upgrade to ADF or 2-3 day fasting
for a week or two and see how it goes.

15 2021-11-07 02:01

liver it has the carbs

16 2021-11-07 05:32

>>15
Wtf, I just searched it up, how the fuck it has carbs???
It's fucking meat
Ughh, 4 net carbs per 4 oz serving, Jesus Christ.

17 2021-11-07 05:56

it's the body's primary locus of glucogensis.

18 2021-11-07 09:11

Any kind of special diet is sorta gay.
It might be good because you cut out on some obvious bad stuff, but you can basically eat everything in moderation and don't worry.

19 2021-11-07 10:15

>>14
I like having a body in ketogenic mode. While my normal eating protocol is within a six hour window, some days I eat nothing that breaks my fast (I only drink plain tea). I don't make that a regular habit for my eating protocol. I know that it's easy for me to skip a day for eating because I've trained my body to be ketogenic. I aim not to have too much ketones in my body so I try not to skip eating for more than one day.

20 2021-11-07 13:32

>>18
Truth. For most people some kind of workout routine would probably do more in relation to their general fitness than any kind of clever diet.

21 2021-11-07 16:00

You need both.

22 2021-11-07 16:28

Need is relative. Admittedly it probably won't hurt to have both. Still i'd guess the person working out every day while surviving on junk food would easily be more healthy than the person bookkeeping every spoon of whatever while spending most of their time in front of a screen.

23 2021-11-07 17:44

Personal chemistry is a lot of both of those examples, but it is a fine point you made.

24 2021-11-07 21:45

>>18
You're right that moderation is key.
But I like keto because of the its effects on my body, and the food is delicious.
If I was having carbs I would feel more hunger and have my body be more inflammatory

>>20
Exercise is important, but a good diet is most of it, that's why they say 75% is diet, and 15% is exercise.
Sleep is very important as well.
Yesterday I weighed 132lb, and I hadn't slept for 2 days.
Got a long rest and woke up to 125lb, and now I don't plant to fast for 4 days as I had planned.
I will probably start doing akin to >>19 and fast for 1 or 2 days max from now on.

25 2021-11-07 22:01

>>22
Ehh, I'd say a person eating highly processed hydrogenated vegetable oils, refined iodized salts / sugar, processed foods/ meats with hormones and antibiotics who are fed GMO grains, gluten, white bread/white rice, but exercises will not be healthier than one that has a top notch diet but doesn't.

Those foods are highly inflammatory and bad for your body.
The effects start to add up over time.

Just hydrogenated oils (trans fats) alone stay in your body 51 days wreaking havoc as free radicals on the cells, because your body can't process them.
Will also cause lots of lipid peroxidation because vegetable oils are poly unsaturated and mostly omega 6 and highly unstable, which when combined with the inflammation from sugar and gluten, will cause clogging of the arteries.

There's also the gut microbiome, which will be wrecked in that diet.
The chances for cancer increase as well, because cancer likes glucose, specially sugar.
Colorectal cancer as well, from the nitrates in the processed meats.

There's a myriad of things to consider, like blood pressure, etc.
The shittiest diet is the standard american diet, just avoid it.

26 2021-11-07 22:24

Why must life be this hard? You can't even eat in peace, you need a doctorate in dianetics otherwise you end up with a dysfunctional body.

27 2021-11-07 23:11

>>26
Just eat real whole foods, and avoid processed foods.
Always read the ingredient list.
Avoid stuff with long ingredient lists.
With whole foods like meats, avoid added hormones or antibiotics.
With vegetables, stick to the clean ones that don't need to be organic (avoid the dirty dozen)
Eat a varied source of foods for vitamins / minerals, and eat in moderation.
You don't need to do special diet like me, I just do it because its one of my hobbies and enjoy how it all works.

28 2021-11-07 23:39

>>26
You can thank capitalism, the jews, technological society, population increase, whomever you wish. The list of real or supposed culprits is long.

29 2021-11-08 01:56

>>26
It is not hard for the vast majority of people to live a strong healthy life. One important key for this the virtue of moderation.
Nutrition is normally not hard for the vast majority of people. All forms of nutrition become toxins when you consume too much of it. Learn to chew your food well. Eat your foods with as minimal food processing as you can.
The other parts to a healthy life includes daily physical exercise and nightly restful sleep.
When you combine this with conscious breathing and daily mindful meditation, your body can perform with high efficiency in your daily life.

30 2021-11-08 07:10

>>25
I'd love to take challenge but then eating a lot of junk food is just way to uneconomical for me.

>>26
It's pretty easy if you want it to be. Just pretend you are on a constrained budget. Let's say you have 15€ per week on food and voila most unhealthy stuff is gone. The random chocolate bar you sneak into your grocery list wont be able to do much harm.

31 2021-11-08 13:59 *

I'm more productive when I starve myself for multiple days than when I do ketosis. Your brain runs on glucose and when you take that away you get stupid.

32 2021-11-08 14:41

nu uh your stupid

33 2021-11-08 14:47

>>31
Fasting is literaly fueled by ketosis...
How do you think your body survives without food?
It eats its own fat, by producing ketones.
This is why you feel better mental focus when fasting, because your brain is fueled by ketones.

34 2021-11-08 16:49

>>28
It's the jews (the Judes really, the ideology not the race) twisting capitalism and technology to increase the population via immigration

35 2021-11-08 17:58

Wait, I thought it ate both fat and muscles, and keto was special in that it supposedly ate only the fat, while sparing the muscles. Which is why it is usually recommended only to athletes who are content with their weight but not body composition. Am I confusing it with something?

36 2021-11-08 18:45

>>33 i am experienced with both fasting and keto, and although I feel sharper either way compared to when I'm carby, i certainly do in fact feel a little bit more enhanced when i'm fasting. i don't know if it's because some hormonal response from a full stomach or what on earth it is, but i do think there might just be something to it.

37 2021-11-08 19:57

>>35
Take a look at _catabolysis_. Catabolysis is the most severe form of malnutrition.

38 2021-11-08 20:14

>>35
It does eat both muscle and fat, whether fasting or keto diet.
Fasting and keto both help secrete growth hormones, which preserve muscle.
Gluconeogenesis is another mechanism by which the body creates glucose in a keto diet.
It essentially means the breakdown of muscle to make glucose.
The body tries to avoid this process though.
This is why you "must" have 20% protein on keto, otherwise your body will do more gluconeogenesis.
The only way to get away with eating more protein is to do more resistance training.

Although, new research has shown gluconeogenesis to be linear to protein intake up to a certain point, where it just stops and fat is used instead.

Skewing towards lower fat and higher protein for a short period helps with body recomposition as well.

tldr; dont be afraid of protein on keto

39 2021-11-09 19:34

45 2021-11-19 22:27

True keto is when you haven't eaten for 2 days or more though.
Did you actually measure your glucose/betahydroxybytirate ratio of that meal regime you posted?

46 2021-11-20 01:20

>>45
I'm not going to spend money on testing glucose/insulin because its a recurring cost.
Although I do have a device available.
And I've done 2 day fasts for more than 30 times now.
That was even when not keto.
I would like to know the values though, just not economical for me.

47 2021-11-20 05:07

true keto is when you haven't eaten for 2 days or more

This is not sensible. True keto is any time the body produces ketone bodies. Your body produces ketones whenever there isn't enough glucose stored in the body to use within the metabolism process. The state of ketogenesis can happen any time, ketogenesis is subject to how much and when glucose is consumed into the body as well as the energy demand that's imposed onto the body.

52 2021-11-21 03:21

>>51
No dude.
Imagine not being able to eat fish and bacon or ground beef.
Where are you going to get omega 3 fats, from flax seeds, oh wait, not, that has carbs???
Nuts has carbs as well.
Meat also has B12 vitamins which are important for the body.
Meat also taste fucking good and has 0 carbs (unless liver).
This post has to be a joke, I'm pondering the possible foods to eat on that diet and I come up with nothing

53 2021-11-21 03:36

Well, I've looked at it. I was thinking something like macadamia oil with vitamin blend and whey protein. I'm sure you could get a robust blend of vegan oils with some work and invention, then of course synthetic sources come into play here. I don't think it's not feasible, and I guess there are a rare rare few people that have tried it for a while. Don't know much about that.

It would be interesting to run with it a vlckd and if and just see how far you could live, but there is more to life than this. Give me some oily fish any day, close enough.

The argument presented of why keto is stupid is basically that it's hard to maintain and most people do it wrong. That has nothing to do with the keto diet itself, but with the people who do it.

Objectively it works, it's healthy, it's tasty and it trains discipline.
If people can't do it right or can't keep it up, that's on the people, not on the product.
