Osprey farpoint 40, black color. Maybe not the best for hiking but I don't like to look like a hiker in town. Everything is ultra lightweight to fit in. No walking sticks, no sleeping pad attached. The metallic water battle is the only thing outside of the bag, in the net, but it looks plain too.

6 2021-07-12 16:37

I'm not about to but I've tried hammocks in the past since they're way easier to work with and carry than tents. Does anyone have any tips for my next trip out? I've never tried them in the rain.

7 2021-07-12 17:00

>>6
You could simply use a tarp above the hammock. Rain is always the funniest part, don't overlook it.

8 2021-07-12 18:46

[*] pants that can magically turn into bermuda shorts
[*] rain overpants
[*] ghetto tracksuit pant
[*] sunglasses
I'm not white enough for needing sunscreen, I've never used that. I'll get aspirins eventually and I'm ready to go. Do I really need them, I don't know. I won't carry more than 2 days worth of food, that means I'll have to see some kind of civilization every other day.

9 2021-07-12 20:13

>>5 Osprey is a damned fine brand of backpack. I'm into the ultralight mindframe, too. I don't hike much anymore, though.

10 2021-07-13 06:39

I'm too afraid to do it alone.

11 2021-07-13 13:50 *

>>10
What are you afraid of? Bears? Cities are more dangerous than forests, unless there's a lot of bears.

12 2021-07-13 19:19

Meh, I'd say they're about equal. Cities are more likely to fuck you up, forests are more likely to kill you (because you can get stuck alone.) Trails are somewhere in between.

17 2021-07-23 06:24

Lesson learned: bring tasty food.

18 2021-07-25 16:32

I changed the tent for a hammock and a tarp. My bag is now much lighter. There are a few other things that I'll never need like sunglasses, insect repellent or sitting pad.

The solar panel works wonderfully, I didn't expect that. It charges the phone about as fast as on outlet. I have a cheap Android phone that I'll be replacing with a second-hand iPhone SE 2016. It's not because I want to look fancy on the trails but because carrying a phone the size of a freaking shoe is highly impractical.

19 2021-07-27 20:13

Posting from my hammock, literally in the woods. It’s raining a bit but it’s ok because I have a tarpaulin.
A retard has pinned the best spot in Google Maps so other retards are partying there.

20 2021-07-27 20:51

It’s the first time I try to sleep in a hammock and of course I’ve managed to fall and was trapped in the mosquito net. I escaped, all is well. Temperature is 10C. Still raining.

21 2021-07-27 23:20

>>20
I assume the sleeping back is keeping you warm enough? Stay /cozy/ anon.

22 2021-07-28 00:02

>>21
The sleeping bag would be fine. The problem with hammocks is that the underside gets cold. I should have taken the inflatable mat with me. I think I have a space blanket that I could use as insulation layer but I’d have to get out of the hammock.

23 2021-07-28 00:42

>>22
That seems rather uncomfy actually. I assumed you were in both your hammock and your sleeping bag. Maybe these aren't practical to combine.

24 2021-07-28 12:40

>>23
Oh no, of course I have a sleeping bag. I would have frozen to death at 1300 meters otherwise. But you also need an insulation pad for your back because the wind blows the air under it and the hammock fabric doesn’t affair any thermal insulation. A space blanket doesn’t work either, it only reflects infrareds if you keep it at some distance of your body.

Too bad this is not an imageboard, I’d post some landscapes.

25 2021-07-28 12:41 *

btw /out/ is a fun board. It’s almost as slow as this place because 4chan doesn’t go out by definition. They also despise frogposting.

26 2021-07-28 15:24

>>24

But you also need an insulation pad for your back because the wind blows the air under it and the hammock fabric doesn’t affair any thermal insulation.

Ah, that makes sense.

Summer camp starts soon.

29 2021-08-02 14:45

How do you plan your hikes? I mean the route. Is there some good libre software to do it?

30 2021-08-03 07:45

>>29
I haven't found a good software much less libre software. I currently use an app based on leaflet with the maps of the geographical institute of my country. I might even pay for it to unlock the offline maps feature. I still have to use G*ogle Maps (to spot tree patches for bivouac on satellite view for instance)
I usually plan the destination but not a precise route, I can change hiking paths if I feel so inclined.

Amazon had Chinese-made inflatable kayaks for 1/2 that price.

34 2021-08-05 20:00

>>33 I can build a new kayak out of pizza boxes and crazy glue for half that price.

35 2021-08-06 12:46

What wilderness do you go to? As far as I can tell there's no free camping on the east coast any more.

36 2021-08-06 15:09

Are there any national parks out that way? The rainbows have just straight up lived on public lands for ages now.

37 2021-08-08 22:00

I've been sleeping outside for several night now. I'd like to start working outside as well, and be able to continue doing so into the winter. (for the former I at minimum need a battery for my laptop, but maybe even a separate solar panel, battery, and a fan for the mosquitoes)

Even in winter here most days are just below freezing, I'm curious if anyone has any ideas about how to best live out doors in these temperatures. I just learned about hot-tenting which seems sort of like what the American plains Indians used to do. Has anyone tried to do this for longer visits? Is it warm enough to type?

38 2021-08-09 00:59

I do not like sleeping when it's cold out. You might get a nice bedroll and tarp? Why not head south and winter in a homeless shelter?

39 2021-08-09 01:23 *

>>38
I'm not currently homeless, I'm still considering it but it seems unlikely that I'll go this way. Regarding the bedroll and tarp do they make sufficiently rated versions of these to be able to type in a hair below freezing weather with the assistance of your body heat? I noticed hot-tents seem to be used in much colder weather than we have here, so maybe there is an alternative I'm not aware of.

40 2021-08-10 18:42

>>37,39
Apparently my tent is not particularly water resistant. I saw a canvas tent intended to go over a hammock and contain a stove which interested me. There aren't many ways for such a thing to fail in comparison to a typical tent.

41 2021-08-10 23:10

>>39
Some bivies are very efficient in cold weather and they have the best stealth. But you'll get very tired of sleeping in it for too long. Try to altern with couchsurfing and maybe homeless shelters if they're not too fucked up in your country. Some monasteries also have a hospitality tradition (in catholic countries at least) and they're usually a much better place than homeless shelters.

42 2021-08-10 23:13

But really, try it for a night or two before planning to live in a tent or whatever.

43 2021-08-11 13:49 *

bivies

I don't think I would be able to type in this, and portability isn't a major concern of mine. My motivation is simply to have cleaner air and my own space. I have access to a small wood that I have permission to camp in indefinitely. Further I plan on simply purchasing food, with gardening being for supplementary.

20x15cm which fits easily in a backpack but you also need a paddle.

Still haven't thought of a good way to deal with the rain. Each night for a few nights now I've had a pool of an inch or so in the corners, and my blankets have gotten a bit soaked. I have to ring out the puddles with a towel and use fewer of my blankets than I would like.

I'm going to try to correct this again tomorrow, for tonight my stuff is sufficiently saturated for me to have difficulty justifying staying outside. This will then be the first night in a couple weeks I sleep indoors.

51 2021-08-23 15:46

>>50
My solution to this issue was simply to not leave my things in my tent, and hope it doesn't rain at night. A family member of mine had a generous idea and decided to buy me a four season tent. It hasn't arived yet but it's spacious, waterproof, and has a fireproof stovepipe. I'm very excited.

This solution to the rain has worked out fine enough so far. My new tent arrived two weeks ago but I'm still waiting for it to air out. It has started to get cold here, yesterday the low was 46F, and I don't yet have a sleeping bag or stove, just some blankets. I've perhaps stayed in three or four nights total since I started sleeping out nearly two months ago now.

Anyone doing anything interesting these days?

55 2021-09-27 02:47 *

>>54
Oh, I forgot to mention, I've also been working outside just on the patio. This is the main reason I want a stove is so I can work in the day in my tent once I get some new 18650 cells for my laptop. I could potentially even cook to a degree on the stove.

56 2021-11-04 00:18

>>54
Probably up around a week indoors total now, and I still haven't moved into my other tent, it still reaks of VOCs. Yesterday was the first frost. I was quite cold, and I guess I didn't sleep very well because when I came back inside I spent most of my day sleeping in my chair only getting a little reading done. I haven't been spending as much time working outside recently.

57 2021-11-07 23:14

Interesting thread, can't wait to do some camping myself as I've never done it.
I want to hunt as well, there's so much /out/ activity to do.
I wonder how rough winter camping is.
