The internal structure of Linux changes over time; there is no commitment for the internals to act as a stable platform for the long-term. What this means is that technologies that directly target internal Linux features needs to be perpetually updated to match the changes when it happens. This is the reason why hardware drivers written for one version of Linux isn't guaranteed to work for later versions of Linux. What is guaranteed is that maintainers cooperate with one another and maintain their specific project to reflect the updated internal Linux structure.
