Christianity has continuity of belief and cultural touchstones in Europe stemming back more than a thousand years, for one. That grasp is failing, true, but as far as instrumental and "materialist" belief systems, trying to bootstrap something else when there's a perfectly functional system in front of you, that also all of the governance and juridical structures ultimately reduce to is probably a better choice than gulags or capeshit.
