Philosophy

1 2021-09-08 15:40

Debate the shit out of your opponent to your hearts content

2 2021-09-08 19:40

philosophy is a word game for people that don't know better

3 2021-09-08 19:43

philosophy tries to find truth not "win" arguments

4 2023-06-13 21:45

Plato is goated

5 2023-06-15 09:53

φιλοσοφία - love of wisdom

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

As cool as that is, it's important to remember that a missive that was addressed to the Corinthian church isn't necessarily applicable to anybody beyond that specific Corinthian church.

There is no faith but truth, and no truth but faith. Your senses are all you have, and beyond that there is only the darkness of oblivion forever and the I AM.

9 2023-07-23 01:25

Also Paul wasn't Christ. People (especially Calvinists for some reason) get way too hung up on him.

Is fire flammable?

BOY 1 : "I'VE DECIDED!! I'M GOING AFTER THAT BULLY..."

BOY 2 : "AH-AH-AH! REMEMBER, VIOLENCE ONLY BEGETS VIOLENCE...

LIKE NIETZCHE SAYS, THOSE WHO BATTLE MONSTERS SHOULD BEWARE LEST THEY BECOME MONSTERS TOO..."

BOY 1 : "DOES NIETZONE SAY THE SAME ABOUT BATTLING GORILLAS WITH DOWNS SYNDROME?!"

BOY 2 : "UH... NOT QUITE..."

BOY 1 : "RIGHT, WHERE'S MY BASEBALL BAT?"

first reaction: i like that one

second reaction: Nietzsche isn't exactly know as the philosopher of peace. More like the philosopher behind the Third Reich. (Hitler loved Nietzsche and gave away collections of him as presents. Anyway...) You're attack on "biologically inferior" people such as one's with Down Syndrome also strongly reminds me of Nazi death camps... This re-awakening of Nietzsche's appear-always-right and turn Christians into Spartan warriors rhetoric in the USA is worrying in general. You need to be better than Nazi Germany...

13 2023-08-30 18:21

Nietzsche is not a philosopher. He's a sophist. See Schopenhauer "Die Kunst Recht zu behalten" on how he does it.

14 2023-08-31 10:15

So what's the difference between philosophy and sophistry?

15 2023-08-31 19:19

sophistry according to google: the use of clever but false arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving.

In my mind, in simpler words, the philosopher tries to be honest and the sophist is a liar.

16 2023-08-31 19:24

Nietzsche described himself as poet at one point... Like "Most importantly the words sound nice and I come across as clever."
He probably wanted to be like Goethe who also uses all sorts of words to say how clever he is when he really isnt all that clever...

idk im tired and i like math better where you just approximately describe something, while it is clear what accuracy you have and what you dont know... (This is more in accordance with philosophy to me. Pythoagoras was probably considered a philosopher (rather than only mathematician) in ancient Greece as people weren't as specialized then, due to less overall people...)

17 2023-08-31 19:29

From "Die Kunst Recht zu behalten"/"The art to appear like the one who's right and won the argument to the audience" (/"My personal list of rhetorical fouls that I hate") I mostly only remember the ad hominem category tbh.
So you say (Nietsche) stuff along the lines of "Kant is fat and ugly. Don't listen to him."

Such behavior is considered below a philospher.

18 2023-08-31 19:35

>>6 I'd argue the vain deceit are lies such as "Napoleon the third was put in power by god."

Discussion can be had in this thread. No need for discord.

21 2023-09-06 17:55

What are your most unusual social values?
Usual ones being liberty, peace and such...

I don't think that "freedom from" exists.
You have freedom to speak your mind, but not freedom from being contradicted.
You have a freedom to not support causes, but others also have freedom to refuse to support you.
Anything that you are truly free from is something you have to chose to avoid, and you have no right to say other people can't do it.

Sure discrimination is wrong, but if you want to cut off your customer base for their color, it's your right.

23 2023-09-14 10:08

freedom from being contradicted

The opposite would be to be forced to shut up and yes, I have the freedom from being forced to shut up...

24 2023-09-14 10:08

no right to say

yes

25 2023-09-14 10:10

i do i mean
freedom of speech

Inconsistent troll over there?

Is religion just a bunch of ancient memes?

27 2023-09-14 11:02

The whole concept of nature is flawed. It would be more accurate to distinguish between human made and not human made.

That being said and sticking with the common usage of nature as not human made, the concept of a state of nature is still flawed when applied to human societies, as no matter what they do, it is necessarily human made.

With that out of the way again, I still disagree with Hobbes in so far as I see no value in tyranny. It's not better than total uncontrolled violence. It is simply the logical consequence, when the bigger fish keeps eating the smaller fish. Anarchist socialism is on the opposite end of the spectrum and in the infinite future. Nothing could be farther from pre-human nature.

28 2023-09-14 11:05

Adding a human made structural layer to something that is and remains not human made...

29 2023-09-14 11:06

...by utilizing a process that is not human made...

30 2023-09-14 11:08

(...and not by aliens. That is included in the term nature.)

31 2023-09-29 17:12

Plato and his fellows were a pederasts, for that reason, they should be ignored like faggots ranting non-sens only made to favor their ideology.
