Is this all life has to offer?

1 2021-05-15 17:00

I've read SICP, finished university, got a well paying job as a software developer, and... now what? Is this all? Forty more years of writing useless software that nobody cares about while my health slowly deteriorates? Going to work so I can pay the bills that will let me go to work next month too? What's the point?

You could alternately live in the woods and eat grubs and berries. But if you want to have nice things, then you're going to have bills, and if you have bills, then the course of your life is as you've described it. Maybe you'll change profession or location, but it's the same crap everywhere.

Don't worry about getting old and dying, because that's going to happen no matter what you do.

a wife?
children?
hobbies?
working in order to live basically?
so-called "work-life-balance"?

You could work to abolish the current state of things too.

This.

Also maybe some ambitions of things to achieve, grand plans, projects, etc.?

You could get into model trains. That's totally what I would do if I weren't doing any of the stuff I was doing now.

Give it all up and go tour with your favorite jamband, easyrider style, and then when you're down to your last dime, jump through your asshole and figure something out.

best free advice you'll ever get.

CLAFOUTIS
Serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS
1 cup whole milk
3 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup all-purpose flour

PREPARATION

Preheat the oven to 325°F. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and butter until the sugar is dissolved. Add the flour and whisk until smooth. Pour the batter into a cast iron skillet or pie pan.
Now add your favorite fruit or flavoring (see below). Bake until the clafoutis is beautifully puffed and golden, 35-40 minutes. Serve immediately.

Clafoutis Variations:
Concord Grape Clafoutis: Once the batter is in the skillet, scatter 2 cups slightly crushed Concord or other black or red grapes on top.
Cherry Clafoutis: Scatter 2 cups pitted cherries onto the batter once it's poured into pie plates.
Pear Clafoutis with Pear Eau de Vie: Core 1 ripe pear and cut into pieces. Pour the batter into the skillet and top with the pear pieces. Bake. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons eau de vie and serve immediately.

Whenever you feel like you're missing out, it is usually your expectations being more rosy than reality. Aside from being in pain or bearing unpleasant situations, experiences in life are in the meh category. The most memorable moments, those that can bring joy pass very quickly. Most of the time it is mostly worries or drowning worries under a heap of other thoughts, or entertainment.

Physical pleasure may feel good for a moment but in the long run, too much of it is bad for your health. That is why we cannot build an ultimate hedonistic paradise. Take something even simple like food. You can only eat so much delicious food before it becomes unbearable. Same with sex. How much sex can one man endure in a day? So instead, we invent games and disguise those games as reality. The game of trying to "succeed", whatever way you may define your success.

It is hard to understand why some people have this attachment to the idea that life is so precious. From a certain standpoint most of the things you get out of life are either encountered so many times that they become mundane or fleeting so quickly that they can only be barely appreciated. In the middle, you get work, worries, pain and small pleasures.

We all know that one day, we are going to die. Why not choose to die when we want to die, in a manner that is peaceful and straightforward. It will be interesting to see how our view of life will change if euthanasia was available for all at no cost.

Samsara (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa%E1%B9%83s%C4%81ra) algorithm:

That algorithm has not been subjected to a rigorous analysis to determine its computational complexity.
An excellent research project for computer scientists and parapsychologists.
