less addictive social media

Real social media makes community outreach easier.

Yes, if the SNS only informed you purely what your network is sharing, it'd make sharing amongst an existing network much easier. Many popular networks end up being generic content aggregators mixed with that simple SNS feature. It basically takes advantage of the fact you're looking at your social network to also show you random garbage that's optimized to make you stick around.

In reality we probably don't want that sort of "show me something cool NOW" that makes YouTube / TikTok (which are content platforms) extremely addictive. We also don't want to have the end user's network be so big that they're constantly seeing garbage that instigates them to engage.
SNS should be boring. Slightly interesting, relevant news, but mostly boring.

Try to avoid mixing in controversy or debate, it requires a certain good-faith mindset. Debates/Forums are their own thing, Content services too. And SNS completely separate from the two. This separation is centered on the *user* of the service. They should really be given as much as help as possible to avoid an infinite scroll on a content service.

As for forums, if they're slow enough, they naturally have a daily cadence. Enforce a high bar of quality and you'll ensure that users will probably post their one good contribution and move on with their lives to await new replies later.
