free software = no profit

literally a market-scheme based on handouts and donations

I made my first fortune as a software consultant that targeted small and medium enterprises. My specialty was in writing free software replacements to proprietary software systems. I made huge profits by selling my time as a professional, I didn't make my profit by selling artificially scarce software usage licenses.

can you spare a brother a dime?

You can make a game and later release the game source code under GPL (you can keep art assets and levels as non-free). This way you can earn money. This is also what ID did with DooM.

Imagine earning megabucks from a GPL game like Dunnet.
How exactly would your plan work for a text adventure game written in Emacs Lisp?

I don't care about profit, I just want to make shit that works and does cool stuff.

shit that works

Shit that works is still shit.
How are you going to feed yourself to have energy to do "cool stuff" if you have no profit?

As a free software activist, I've paid money to buy games that have had their source code released as free software. So while I am part of a tiny minority, I am paying for access to artwork that is designed to work as a game. Yes, I do recognize that people of my demographic represents a negligible amount of revenue to the developer. Some titles that I've paid for include:
• Quake 3 arena
• Morrowind (via the OpenMW engine)
• Delver
• Star Wars Jedi Knight 1 and 2
• Shapez
• Quadrilateral Cowboy
• 0 A.D.
• Hammerfight

Just don't make money off it. Go make money somewhere else. Software has found it's way to this absolutely sorry state because everybody sees the computer as some sort of money making machine.

You can always keep the source closed at first and then re-release it as libre software later. This is what ID did with Doom. You could also sell long-term support for your software (like Red Hat and SUSE do) but this works only for enterprise software. Or you can write just libre software because you want to help others.
