The only truly irreplaceable stuff they have is emacs and the
gcc/binutils toolchain

What did you mean by this? GNU's primary mission is to be a free software operating system. It actually succeeds in allowing users to have freedom their fundamental operating system. Do you define broken to mean GNU is doing things that I don't approve as perfection?
