I would your choices are Python, Perl, Ruby, Lua or Scheme. I recommend Lua and Scheme (R5RS) because they are small languages that can be learned entirely and they don't have any things that would distract you from learning actual concepts. Read Little Schemer or Programming in Lua.

What does it mean to be a "bad programmer"? It your code works and you are able to update it (i.e. readable), then it's good.
