Fun with GnuCOBOL

1 2021-10-17 13:38

Has anyone tried GnuCOBOL?
https://gnucobol.sourceforge.io

It looks like fun. Could you share your experiences? I would like to broaden my programming horizons by learning COBOL.

The biggest question is why and what would you want to do with it? Be honest you just couldn't resist that mainframe at the yard sale, didn't you?

I don't understand what you can do with COBOL that would increase your programming skill. Imperative logic is pretty much the same in all languages with the imperative paradigm.

Functional languages are all different, but imperative languages are all the same? Do you happen to dislike imperative programming?

5 2021-10-18 14:21

I don't dislike imperative programming. I simply prefer the functional paradigm.

I used to write my shitposting tools with OpenCOBOL, but the string formatting shit turned out to be more trouble than it was worth.

The time is ripe for a COBOL renaissance.

8 2024-01-30 05:42

I'd say COBOL is kind of ripe itself!

SNOBOL is not COol but is BOL

10 2024-01-31 08:02

The chance that I'd write COBOL is a SNOBOL's chance in hell.

Wattana's unbeaten run ends

ENGLAND'S Neal Foulds beat James Wattana 5-3 yesterday to stop the Thai snooker star going top of the Matchroom League.

After the first four frames were shared, Foulds knocked in breaks of 42, 91 and 36 to inflict the first league defeat on Wattana.

World champion Stephen Hendry leads the table with nine points from three games.

Foulds has eight points with Jimmy White, Wattana and early leader Tony Meo while Dennis Taylor is bottom with two points from six games.
