Besides saying that "Linux is used in billions of smartphones" is fairly misleading. Of course in a strict sense it is (Linux is really just the kernel) but whole environment is not much like what one would expect at all. Even those parts that are in fact somewhat familiar are usually covered by alternative solutions. It's obvious Google tried to avoid GPL whereever possible and the sole reason Linux being used for the kernel is likely mostly due to missing alternatives at the time.
