Solving many problems with poor abstractions leads to bloat. For the problems you mention busdma, and NeWS are examples of better abstractions even in existing UNIX systems. Beyond this, NeWS has many superfluous features, and missed opportunities for abstraction which might be taken from Morphic-like systems for example. More than this it's not hard to imagine many types of common hardware exposing a common interface. Why not?
