It's not clear to me that their feelings of being pathetic and weak have to be inaccurate. So there are many reasons why one would be like this certainly having the mentality that you are not in control of yourself would have a potentially significant impact. This would include ironically as you mention getting a bonefied victimhood title. (seems like maybe a sort of stupidity where trying to change it in virtually any way makes it worse, maybe ignoring it would help?)

For a moment I was thinking it was a sort of universal symptom of extensive social media usage, similar to ADHD, or group think; that's probably not true however. In any case ``to name a spirit is to have power over it'' so at least as an observer it seems useful.
