Technology has always been an extra arm of the State. Silicon Valley since its beginning was funded by the American military-industrial complex. Let's not forget how the internet started. And from all these developments we get its crumbs as an afterthought. Even advancements in VR are thanks to all the funding by the military, with i.e. Microsoft developing augmented reality software for them as I type this.
This is the only issue that free software as a movement is completely impotent against. Maybe if it were more radicalized...

Right wingers would think that detecting criminals is good, left wingers would think that being able to plan an economy is good. You could use it for both, but you'll probably never get everyone to like it, unless it is something trivial like "recognize that cat".
