Take a 52 Card deck of standard playing cards and
deal out evenly eight piles of 6 cards each, each in a
pile adjacent to an empty central placeholder
in the middle.

It should look something like this:

[][][]
[] []
[][][]

There should be six cards face up in each pile with
an empty place holder in the center of these.
You should also have four cards left over.

These are
your hand.

The purpose of the game is to move all the cards from
the surrounding piles into the centermost space.
Play begins by placing a card from your hand into the
centermost space.

Then, you may place another card from one of the
adjacent piles over the center card if meets either of
two conditions:

1. It is the same face value (a four of spades
on top of a four of diamonds)

2. It is the same suit (a four of spades over a jack
of spades)

This process is repeated until there are no more legal
moves available. If you have cards in your hand and
there are no legal moves, you may play a card from
your hand into the centermost pile and start playing
cards from the adjacent piles over it in terms of suit
or face value.

The game is over when there are no more legal moves
and no more cards in your hand to be played.

When all the cards are in the centermost square, you
win! Yippie skipped hooray. If you have no cards in
hand and then get all your cards into the centermost
space, that is an "avalanche" and quite the rare
occurrence. It is a very rarare super-win condition
and is very satisfying when it occurs.

Enjoy playing Avalanche solitaire. You'll love it.
