I guess it's about making sure your internal motivation isn't corrupted by things external. Imagine your civilization, all you know, is literally a brothel, and your culture is shaped to conform to the brothel. How would you know what you really wanted? How would you know how to actually make the most of your terrible situation? If you never questioned your motivations you'd likely end up having very unfortunate aspirations. I just try to do my own thing, and do unto others. Make a fast buck.
