Will 2022 will be the year of the Linux desktop?

1 2022-01-01 10:04

Can it happen this year?

2 2022-01-01 13:34

No. As usual, 2022 will be another year of the Microsoft Windows desktop. Linux will be obsolete before it can even get close to the installed base of Microsoft Windows.

Hopefully paving the way for the end of the UNIX era and the flourishing of better systems along the way.

4 2022-01-01 22:42 *

Why not the year of the iOS and Android Desktop?

5 2022-01-02 09:24

>>3
The end of the UNIX era will hopefully occur when Microsoft, Facebook, and Google merge. They will pool their resources together to end open source once and for all. With their combined resources, they will be able to completely dominate the desktop world for the next century, all without interference from the UNIX, Linux, FSF and open source pests.

6 2022-01-02 09:35

>>4
Why would you want that to happen?

7 2022-01-04 11:12 *

>>4
Isn't that already true.

8 2022-01-05 02:43

This will be the year of the Hurd Desktop.

9 2022-01-05 02:51

plan9 is a contender

10 2022-01-05 03:03

>>9 9front, 9legacy, or some other fork?

11 2022-01-08 10:06

I don't really think so but we can't deny the fact that Linux is becoming more and more popular lately. 2022 won't be the year of Linux desktop but new users are joining the
community day by day. Well, I'm still waiting for the year of BSD.

chinese linux will take off.
they know to copy the layout of something successful like windows.
there are already two new original desktops made, ubuntu kylin and deepin.
you look at how gnome and kde have gone you see theyve gone backwards instead of forwards.
however it is still a chinese product and i aint gonna read and audit an entire codebase and compile myself.
sure ubuntu kylin is part of canocal and doesnt require a eula like deepin does, but canocal still a company and cannot be trusted.

at the end of the day linux is still shit but so is modern day windows.
just make a good firewall and dont be stupud. if worse cums to worse just unplug the internet. hacker problem solved unless you are stupid and plugin a usb from the streets.

Feeling is pretty tight, free, and light on system resources for spyware.

14 2022-01-08 14:16

Deepin

YES/NO

I run a headless server, so it hasn't mattered personally. I just use VNC and i3 when I really need it. I guess I've just never cared for a heavy UI. I like cli too much

17 2022-01-20 22:21

I use FreeBSD it's best.

18 2022-03-08 05:27

OP implies he sells an All-in-Ones, like System76, to compete with a strategic platinum Linus Foundation membership Microsoft already strangles in a capitalist system.

19 2022-03-08 15:09

no. x11 will need to be replaced before that happens

20 2022-03-08 15:10 *

Linux also needs better audio support.

21 2022-03-08 17:03

User-friendly software needs to be friendly to modification at the source code level, otherwise it's just a hierophantic cult with extra steps.

22 2022-03-08 20:14

You know what Linux is good for?
Tablets and phones. Year of the telecom handheld +15.

23 2022-03-09 02:43

Android is a flavor of Linux, right?

I just don't get it. KDE is great and it just works. But why normal users won't switch to Kubuntu?

This tbh.

There's still some time left, we just need to convince Elon Musk to buy Microsoft!

28 2022-11-08 15:31 *

See you in two months!

29 2022-11-09 03:20

Already happened, it's called Chrome OS.

30 2022-11-09 08:11

Used exclusively on laptops (so-called "Chromebooks"), on desktops.

31 2022-11-11 06:17

NomadBSD is a sexy looking live booot district that can also be installed.

32 2022-11-15 18:55 *

Either Linux will replace Windows or Windows will just become a tool for running the GNU userspace.
As long as I don't have to deal with it I don't really care.

For most of the sorts of people that use Windows, the only way they ever know if they're running X11 or Wayland is when screenshots and screensharing don't work or they try to change their scroll speed.
