Depression is a survival mechanism against suicidal panic. It limits the patient's capability to act and think. It is well known that as the condition of the depressed improves, the risk of suicide increases. This is also why anti-depressants are known to "numb" the patient: they only displace the effects of depression, for it they were to actually cure it, the patient would succumb to suicidal panic.
