Have you ever seen a dog scratch an itch? It keeps scratching, so long, so many times that the itch eventually turns into a sore but it doesn't stop itching so the dog doesn't stop scratching. Plus, scratching that itch bring momentarily pleasure, so it keeps scratching and bleeding and hurting till the sore starts to grow bigger but it doesn't stop itching and any further scratching will cause intense pain then it stops for while. Then the sores start to heal but the itches start again and the scratching resumes and the healing sore is cut open again and the intense pain sets in again and the cycle continues...
Why does it feel like some habits are like itches? You watch youtube videos for a little while then you want to see more, then an hour passes, then two hours, then you keep going till a whole day passes. Some projects fall behind schedule and you seem to be oblivious. Then you come to your senses and stop and try to keep a reign on your habit but then you forget... and starts again. Just to repeat the cycle.
Maybe the urge to do that thing is just like an itch, one that could simply be endured and after ignoring it for a while, it will die off on its own.
