I honestly never understood why JS was picked as the scripting language of GNOME. Surely it can't be only that it was hip to use it outside of web at the time?

The only reason I can think of is that it had the best compromise of "there are a lot of developers familiar with it" and "it doesn't require a special runtime, such as the JVM".
